Supermicro announces its latest workstation, a tower model based on the latest generation AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro CPU. Supermicro and AMD say this new CPU is the first on the market to offer up to 64 cores and 8 memory channels. AMD builds this workstation CPU using 7nm technology, making it capable of processing the most demanding tasks quickly. 

Depending on the workflow type for your workstation, for multithreaded tasks, Supermicro recommends 64-core and 32-core for applications in design and manufacturing; software; and architecture, engineering and construction (AEC). For lightly threaded tasks, specifically for design and manufacture and AEC, the recommendation is 16-core. 

The Supermicro A+ SuperWorkstation 5014A-TT will be delivered as a rack-ready tower workstation. The Ryzen Threadripper Pro is a single-socket CPU, built for high performance in applications where the CPU is more important than the GPU. This includes many engineering simulation, and rendering applications. 

Supermicro says this new workstation can support up to 2TB of memory, running at up to 3200 MHz in 8 DIMM slots. A 2000W power supply is standard to support up 4 GPUs.

AMD says the Threadripper Pro in this Supermicro workstation compares favorably to the Intel Xeon 8280, which offers 28 cores. This new CPU is based on AMD’s AM4 CPU platform, a 1331-pin socket that supports the latest computation technologies including PCIe 4.0, NVMe, SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps, and several RAID configurations.  

Expansion slots include PCI-Express 4.0, M.2, and U.2. A variety of fan configurations are possible, and so is closed-loop water cooling for the CPU.
