Exa Optimizes Solar Car

University of Michigan uses PowerFLOW to reduce aerodynamic drag by 30 percent.

Fluids simulation specialist Exa helped optimize the University of Michigan's Quantum solar car. Using Exa's PowerFLOW software, engineers achieved a 30 percent drag reduction compared to the previous car, resulting in an overall drag value below 0.1. The  student-run University of Michigan Solar Car Team designs and builds solar cars used to race nationally and internationally.

The team chose Exas PowerFLOW software to analyze and optimize the aerodynamics on the new, lighter vehicle to ensure the drag values reached ultra aerodynamic levels (less than .1). The new vehicle raced in the VEOLIA World Solar Car Challenge in Australia this October.
