Formlabs, the manufacturer of the Form 1+ SLA (stereolithography apparatus) 3D printer, has released a new line of high-performance functional resins. The family, which includes Castable and Flexible resins, expands capabilities of the Form 1+, enables casting of metal parts and printing of soft models.

The Castable Resin burns cleanly, and captures crisp, precise details and smooth surfaces. It is ideal for jewelers, engineers and designers, the company states.

The Flexible Resin is a rubber-like material and is suitable for hinges, engineering applications, shock absorption, tactile surfaces and a variety of resilient, pliable parts.

“A lot of attention in 3D printing goes to the machines itself,” said Maxim Lobovsky, co-founder, Formlabs. “At Formlabs, we’ve always considered the materials to be just as important. A library of functional materials has always been part of our plan, we’re pleased to introduce these resins to the world.”

The Castable Resin is currently available. The Flexible Resin will be released in December.
