Microsoft Announces New Technical Computing Initiative

Microsoft’s new Technical Computing initiative is an effort designed to bring supercomputing power and resources to a much wider group of scientists, engineers, and analysts who are working to address challenges through modeling and prediction.

“Innovations in technology are transforming our ability to measure, monitor, and model how the world behaves,” according to a statement by Microsoft Server and Tools Business President Bob Muglia. “The implication for scientific research is profound, and it will transform the way we tackle global challenges like health care and climate change. It will also have a huge impact on engineering and business, delivering breakthroughs that could lead to the creation of new products, new businesses and even new industries.

The Technical Computing Group focuses on the company’s three areas of technical computing investment:

• Cloud: Bringing technical computing power to scientists, engineers and analysts through cloud computing to help ensure processing resources are available whenever they are needed. Supercomputing work may emerge as a “killer app” for the cloud, according to Microsoft.
• Easier, consistent parallel programming: Delivering new tools that will help simplify parallel development from the desktop to the cluster to the cloud.
• Developing new technical computing tools that will help speed discovery. This includes working with customers and industry partners on innovative solutions.
