Renishaw has received a compliance certificate from TÜV SÜD for its AM250 laser melting machine. The addition to the company's additive manufacturing products division is intended to help 3D printing evolve into a mainstream manufacturing tool, a press release states.

The AM250 laser melting machine uses a high-powered ytterbium fiber laser to fuse fine metallic powders together and create parts. It can produce a variety of structures, including implantable medical devices to aerospace geometries. Materials that can be used for the AM250 are stainless steel, aluminum, titanium and colbalt-chrome alloys.

Having the TÜV SÜD certification confirms that the equipment is ruggedized, fully-tested and fully-functional for use in 24/7 in industrial environments. It is an electrical safety standard for the United States and Canadian markets.

“There are a huge number of myths surrounding 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies,” said Mark Kirby, business manager for additive products, Canada, at Renishaw. “This is partly the result of mainstream media misrepresentation but also partially because of unfulfilled expectations. This kind of certification helps prove that we are able to clearly communicate the manufacturing benefits to our clients and then deliver on them."
