SolidThinking, a subsidiary of Altair, is gearing up for a global event series, dubbed SolidThinking CONVERGE.

The premiere CONVERGE event is set to take place on September 8-9 in Los Angeles, California, at the Skirball Cultural Center. The subsequent ones will be in Germany, China, Japan, India, and Korea.

Jim Hassberger, President of SolidThinking, said, “We’re a global company with more than 150 partners distributing our technology around the world. We have employees and offices in each of the CONVERGE  event sites. Our goal is to establish an evolving conference series where the latest ideas and technologies for product creation can be shared and discovered. Obviously, the discovery of our great technology would be a welcome side effect.”

SolidThinking’s offerings include SolidThinking Inspire and SolidThinking Evolve. Inspire makes topology optimization and lightweighting, which are often confined to experts, much more accessible through a simple, intuitive interface. Evolve is a 3D NURBS modeler for complex geometry and shapes. The combo gives engineers and designers an effective way to construct and investigate organic, unorthodox shapes for product concepts.

The two products have found a place in the mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing markets. They have also attracted architecture users. Hassberger said, “We actually have several high profile customers in the world of architecture. Many of the first users of our Inspire product were architects and architecture educators searching for morphogenesis or biomimicry [shapes that mimic what can be found in Nature]. We feel that there is a huge potential to leverage simulation-driven design for performance-based concepts in the architecture market.”

SolidThinking became part of Altair when it was acquired in 2008. Today, the brand encompasses newer products:

  • Click2Cast, for software-based casting simulation;
  • Compose, for matrix-based numerical computation;
  • Activate, for model-based system simulation;
  • Embed, for developing embedded systems;
  • Envision, for culling business intelligence and data analysis.
Speakers for the premiere CONVERGE event in Los Angeles include Terry Wohlers, President of the 3D printing market analyst Wohlers Associates. Hassberger said, “Both our Evolve and Inspire products are often used in the ‘design for additive manufacturing’ (AM) process. In fact, Inspire is often viewed as a must-have for companies looking to design for AM [another term for 3D printing]. We have projects in the works to expand/improve our connections to other tools and equipment in the field.”
