The PLM Green Global Alliance (PGGA), an international collaboration, has launched, according to Richard McFall from PLM Alliances, Jos Voskuil from TacIT, Oleg Shilovitsky from Beyond PLM, and Bjorn Fidjeland from plmPartner.

The coalition was founded with the mission to create a global connection and community between professionals who use, develop, market or support Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) enabling technologies and software solutions that have value in addressing the causes and consequences of climate change due to human-generated greenhouse gas emissions.

By using the PGGA as a platform of collaboration, working PLM professionals, researchers, teachers, students, users, developers and followers are invited to share case study examples, best practices, and other resources illustrating how PLM technologies can be used to:

  • make products and processes more efficient;
  • find and develop new sources of renewable energy;
  • store and transmit alternative energy supplies;
  • reduce or sequester human-made carbon emissions;
  • capture naturally produced greenhouse gasses like methane;
  • develop green manufacturing processes;
  • recycle, reuse and repurpose assets and natural resources;
  • simulate and test global geoengineering strategies;
  • monitor a warming planet and the impact of climate change; and
  • enhance the resiliency of infrastructures and communities. 

The PLM technologies that have a role in helping to combat climate change include but are not limited to: product data management (PDM), CAE/simulation & analysis (SA), CAD, digital twins (DT), additive manufacturing/3D printing (AM/3DP), product portfolio management (PPM), augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), model-based systems engineering (MBSE), multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), asset lifecycle information management (ALIM), configuration management (CM), industrial internet of things (IIOT), high-performance computing (HPC) and enterprise innovation management (EIM).

“We face an urgent challenge to create a more sustainable and green future for our industries, economies, communities and all life forms on our planet that depend on healthy interdependent ecosystems," PLM Green Global Alliance founder Rich McFall comments. "In our informal alliance we seek to educate, advocate, and collaborate for greater recognition of the role of PLM to help assess, reduce, mitigate, and adapt to the effects of climate change now being experienced across the globe.”

Participation in the PGGA is open and free to anyone with sincere interest in the intersection of PLM and Green topics such as climate change, sustainability, green energy, Industry 4.0 and the circular economy. Participants are invited to become involved by following or joining the new PLM Green Global Alliance LinkedIn Group. The alliance plans to launch a website early in 2020 to collect and share examples, thought leadership, white papers and other useful resources.
