ASSESS Initiative announces the new monthly ASSESS Insight Webinar Series. The first in this series is scheduled for Thursday, August 7, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EDT.  The first ASSESS Insight Webinar will focus on "Understanding an Engineering Simulation Risk Model."

With the aid of webinars, the ASSESS Initiative hopes to broaden its exposure to the work that the initiative is doing based on the collaboration of many thought leaders in engineering simulation coming together on the ASSESS themes to foster significant growth in the use and benefit of engineering simulation, the organization reports. The ASSESS Insight Webinar Series is planned to be a combination of ASSESS-related presentations and ASESS theme-based panel discussions.

The webinars are tentatively planned for the first Thursday of every month. Registration for the ASSESS Insight webinars will be open to any who wish to register and attend.

Presentations will be used to inform the audience of advances outlined in Strategic Insight Papers. The Strategic Insight Papers are authored and critiqued by experts in the Engineering Simulation field to promote improved understanding and unique concepts to benefit the engineering simulation community.

These webinars will allow the audience to engage with these ideas and, through their voice, can contribute to furthering the ideas presented. The webinars are also going to be used to allow panels of experts in the ASSESS theme working groups to discuss a question pertinent to that ASSESS Theme. Again, it is hoped that the audience will also get involved with their thoughts and viewpoints. The webinars will also be used to present and discuss relevant ASSESS presentations that have been given at the annual ASSESS Congress and other events.

The first ASSESS Insight Webinar, "Understanding an Engineering Simulation Risk Model," will dive into a discussion on the engineering simulation risk model (ESRM), which is a predictive capability assessment that includes a set of recommended best practices and associated metrics to understand and manage the “appropriateness” and risk associated with engineering simulation-influenced decisions.

The approach outlined in this paper for an ESRM is founded on the concept of determining the “appropriateness” of the simulations performed to influence/support the decision(s) being made. This approach to predictive capability assessment is inspired by the NASA STD-7009A “Use Assessment,” Sandia Predictive Capability Maturity Model, the ASME V&V 40 standard, NAFEMS Simulation Governance, and Management Working Group activities, and the ASSESS Credibility Theme discussions.

ASSSESS Initiative invites interested people to an event on Thursday, August 6, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EDT to understand the ASSESS efforts in this area to further development of an effective generalized ESRM that can be used to support the current and expanding use of engineering simulation.

Registration for the ASSESS Insight webinars will be open to any who wish to register and attend.  However, the recordings of the webinars will be available to ASSESS Initiative members only.
