Cleve Moler Recieves 2014 IEEE John von Neumann Medal

Cleve B. Moler, a mathematician who developed the MATLAB high-level programming development, has been honored by Institute of Electrial & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) with the 2014 IEEE John von Neumann Medal.

The medal, sponsored by IBM, recognizes Molder for his fundamental and widely used contributions to numerical linear algebra and scientific engineering software that transformed computational science. The award was presented at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in Amsterdam on August 23.

Moler developed MATLAB, short for "matrix laboratory," as a simple matrix calculator. Today, the software makes computing easier for scientists and engineers and increases productivity by allowing them to focus on solving problems without needing to write individual codes for matrix computations, the company states. Moler also helped create the LINPACK and EISPACK linear algebra software libraries.

Moler is currently chief mathematician with MathWorks.
