The range of functionality for Delcam’s (Salt Lake City, UT) CopyCAD will extend to include “Tribrid Modeling” in the upcoming release, CopyCAD Pro, by adding triangle modeling to the combination of surface and solid modeling. This combination, currently offered in many existing CAD packages as “hybrid modeling,” offers an alternative way of working for companies developing new variants on existing designs. Having all the different modeling techniques available in a single package streamlines the entire product development process, while reducing the need to transfer data between multiple programs.
The new design approach was achieved by integrating Delcam’s PowerSHAPE surface and solid modeling functionality with the reverse engineering and triangle modeling options available in earlier versions of CopyCAD. With enhancements to key operations, designers will be able to move data captured with reverse engineering into the design environment with ease and consequently can incorporate features into reverse engineered designs rapidly.
Among the new features of CopyCAD Pro over CopyCAD are improvements to the sculpting and model repair tools to edit triangle files. The functionality of PowerSHAPE in CopyCAD Pro makes it easier to create CAD surfaces from triangle data. Plus, analysis tools are available in Copy CAD Pro to display the differences between the triangle mesh and the resulting surface. Another valuable feature of the integration into CopyCAD Pro of modeling options from PowerSHAPE is the ability to create “perfect” geometry, an improvement over a reverse engineering system where in certain areas it would give only approximate results. Tribrid Modeling enables Boolean operations to be carried out between triangle models and either surfaces or solids.
