EOS GmbH Electro Optical Systems (Novi, MI), a manufacturer of laser-sintering systems, announced the results of data gathered by Linear Mold & Engineering (Livonia, MI) in a comparative study of manufacturing times for creating molds and mold inserts in Direct Metal Laser-Sintering (DMLS) against traditional machining processes.

During two-and-a-half years of costing out more than 50 commercial tool and mold projects, the data were assembled across a wide variety of industries. What the results demonstrate is that for many applications, DMLS is responsible for significantly reducing production times and consequently, costs. Cost savings using DMLS range between 15 and 30 percent, depending on the complexity of the part.

Linear is well equipped to assemble this type of data since it has a library of benchmark figures for how long different projects take using machining, CNC tooling, EDM, and other tool- and mold-making processes, and a lot of experience with those types of processes. Comparatively, Linear has manufactured molds and inserts in Cobalt Chrome, GP1 (17-4) stainless steel, and DirectMetal-20 using DMLS all over the past three years.
