HOK Sport (Burlington, MA), a sports architecture firm that is using Z Corporation (Burlington, MA) 3D printing technology to enhance the fan experience and the aesthetic appeal of athletic venues during the design phase.

HOK’s recent purchase of the Spectrum Z 510 multicolor 3D printer gives the company the ability to print accurate, high-resolution 3D models on demand throughout the course of a project. It also helps customers visualize the end design better and more quickly than other methods.

Architectural models are generated within hours using the Spectrum Z510, rather than the weeks it took to create them using traditional techniques. HOK designers and architects, working with clients, can then review and revise their designs quickly, so that they can present final designs to owners, athletes, and fans in a timely fashion. The 3D model also presents stakeholders with all possible views so that they can make decisions more easily.

HOK Sport has used the Spectrum Z510 in designs for such projects as the Kansas City Royals' ballpark renovation (scheduled to open 2009), the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team's new arena (scheduled to open 2010), and the Estadio de Futbol Monterrey (shown here) soccer stadium (Mexico, scheduled to open 2011).
