Jon Peddie Research reports the growth of the global PC-based graphics processor units (GPU) market reached 76.9 million units in Q4 of 2024 and PC CPU shipments increased to 71.7 million units.

Overall, GPUs will have a compound annual growth rate of 1.4% from 2024 to 2028 and reach an installed base of 3,008 million units at the end of the forecast period. Over the next 5years, the penetration of discrete GPUs (dGPU) in the PC will be 14%, JPR reports.

Year-to-year, total GPU shipments, including all platforms and all GPUs, declined by 0.9%, desktop graphics decreased by -5.4%, and notebooks increased by 1.0%.

As indicated in the following chart, AMD's overall GPU market share increased by 1.3% from last quarter, Intel's market share rose by 1.9%, and NVIDIA's market share decreased by -3.3%.

Overall, CPU unit shipments increased 8% from last quarter; AMD's increased 14%, and Intel's increased 6%.

The GPU's overall attach rate (including integrated and discrete GPUs, desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in PCs for the quarter decreased to 107%, down -3.2% from the last quarter.

The overall PC CPU market increased 4.6% year to year and 7.8% quarter to quarter.

The fourth quarter is traditionally up slightly from the previous quarter. This quarter's GPU shipments were down from the 10-year average of 5.4%.

“The global political turmoil being created by threatened tariffs against various countries exporting to the US is unsettling the markets, including the stock markets, and causing consumers to either rush to buy to avoid rising prices or not to buy at all,” says Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research. “NVIDIA, with the largest market share, had difficulty meeting demand and, as a result of their size and influence, kept the GPU market from growing as much as it might have. Although that will lead them and AMD into Q1 with a strong backlog, the tariffs will offset further gains for most, if not all, of 2025. As exciting as the AI PC is, it will not be sufficient to motivate consumers to spend ahead.”
