Solid Concepts Inc. Now Offers 3D Scanning

Solid Concepts Inc., a rapid prototyping service provider, will now be offering 3D scanning and recording.

The scanning technology offered is known as laser triangulation scanning. After being scanned, an STL file is created and readied for 3D printing. Solid Concepts will provide simple file cleanup for all scans, a company press release states.

Requirements for all possible scanned objects:

  • Part size between 2 x 2 x 2 in. and 36 x 24 x 36 in.
  • Solid Concepts can record counter bores and internal features up to 5 in. deep
  • Surface can be shiny, rough or smooth, but easily scannable
“We realize designing in 3D is a barrier to entry for many 3D printing enthusiasts,” says Scott McGowan, vice president of marketing. “By providing customers scans of objects they wish to recreate, we’re taking the first small steps to tear those barriers down.”
