Eurocom Corp. has launched the Tornado F7W Mobile Workstation. Described by the company as a supercomputer-class laptop, the Tornado F7W is powered by Intel’s newest multi-core/multi-thread processors and high-performance NVIDIA Quadro upgradable GPUs (graphics processing units).

Eurocom offers the Tornado F7W with a choice of processors, including the Intel Core i9-9900K and Core i7-9700K, as well as the Intel Xeon E-2186G, a six-core/12-thread CPU. Each of these processors are LGA 1151 socket-based, allowing for future upgrades to next-generation Intel processors when available.

Users can equip the Tornado F7W with professional-level NVIDIA Quadro P5200, P4200 and P3200 GPUs. These GPUs are upgradable via MXM 3.1 (Mobile PCI Express Module generation 3.1) slot-based GPU technology. The size of each module is 3.23 x 4.13 in. (82 mm x 105 mm).

Security features that come with the Tornado F7W, Eurocom says, improve the protection of intellectual property assets and restrict access to critical data. Among these features are a smart card reader and a fingerprint scanner for security access. Additionally, the Tornado 7W provides TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 and BIOS disk encryption for data encryption.

The Tornado F7W is capable of supporting both ECC (error-correcting code) and non-ECC memory up to a total of 128GB of DDR4 (double data rate fourth-generation) memory. According to the company, this capability makes the Tornado F7W one of the few laptop designs to use both ECC and non-ECC memory in the same physical model. The company further explains that the Tornado F7W uses ECC memory when configured with a Xeon-class CPU and non-ECC memory when configured with Intel Core i7 or Core i9 processors.

Up to five physical drives for a total of 22TB of storage are possible. The Tornado 7FW will accommodate three M.2 NVMe (non-volatile memory express) SSD (solid-state drive) slots and two 2.5-in. SATA 3 bays running in multiple RAID configurations, including RAID 0/1/5/10. It also allows for RAID 0/1/5 configurations with NVMe SSDs.

The Tornado F7W comes with either a FHD (full high definition) or UHD (ultra high-definition/4K) 17.3-in. display, and it can drive up to four total displays. It also is equipped with five USB 3.1 ports as well as single Thunderbolt 3.0 and HDMI 2.0 ports. Mini Display; headphone, line-in/line out, microphone and networking connections are also provided.

Supported operating systems include VMware, Microsoft Server 2016, Windows 10 and Linux. Tornado F7W provides full network manageability via its VPro-based Intel I219-LM 1GB Ethernet controller on-board.

Among its miscellaneous features are a black aluminum alloy chassis, backlit keyboard and a built-in eight-cell battery pack. This mobile workstation weighs 9.1 lbs. (4.14 kg). When closed, the Tornado F7W measures 17.12x12.56x0.96 in. (428x314x24 mm).

Eurocom offers an optional “anti-hacking protection suite,” which removes the workstation's webcam, microphone and WLAN. This allows for protection of intellectual assets and further defends against malware, tampering and theft of intellectual assets and/or data, the company explains.

Pricing for a base Tornado F7W Mobile Workstation equipped with a 17.3-in. 120Hz FHD 1920x1080 display, 6GB NVIDIA Quadro P3000 GPU (Windows 10 only), six-core Xeon E-2176G CPU and 16GB starts at $3,499, according to the Eurocom website.
