Session 2: Additive Manufacturing

Post-Processing: The Key to Additive Manufacturing Success

AM is typically portrayed as the net-shape, print-and-go, ready-to-deploy manufacturing technology. However, designs with intricate details and small features, and manufacturing using metal powders still pose a challenge. The manufactured parts require post-processing to remove flaws and improve surface finish, so they become truly deployable.

This session will cover:

  • Macro orientations: how they impact surface finish
  • Micro locations: why different faces exhibit different roughness
  • Post-processing methods to remove roughness and improve surface finish
  • Case study: Titanium alloy lattices for high permeability

Carmen Torres-Sanchez PhD, Professor of Multifunctional Materials Manufacturing at Loughborough University

About Carmen

Carmen Torres-Sanchez PhD is a Professor of Multifunctional Materials Manufacturing at Loughborough University, England, UK, where she leads the MMM Lab. She is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research interests are the design, manufacture and validation of multifunctional materials with tailored properties to meet specific requirements (e.g., thermal, structural, chemical, acoustic, biological), and that can do more than ‘one thing at a time’. For example, a lightweight porosity-tailored beam that bends without breaking and transports mass efficiently. Nature calls it bone! The MMM Lab team is multidisciplinary with a strong flavour of manufacturing and the range of applications for our work spans medical devices, transport industries and food technology.
