Ansys Renews Support for ASME Scholarships

Ansys has renewed and increased its support for engineering scholarships with The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with an additional $15,000 donation to the ASME Foundation’s Campaign for Next-Generation Engineers. Last year, ASME Scholarships made possible by Ansys helped five students to focus more on their engineering education and less on finances and, this year, five more students at four universities in the U.S. will benefit.

These engineering students include first-generation college students, children of immigrants and children of single parents who all share a passion for problem-solving and making a positive impact on people and the planet, according to the organizations. 

Influenced by their experiences with the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change, the scholarship recipients’ interests include careers in medical technology, renewable energy, machine design and building, advanced manufacturing and robotics, according to the organizations.

“At Ansys, we have a very diverse and global employee base and that helps inspire creativity, power ingenuity, and has resulted in more than 50 years of growth and success. Through our partnership with ASME, we aim to support ASME in its mission to address the college funding gap and inspire future innovators,” says Ansys Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Julie Murphy.

“Additionally, we are impressed that 45% of ASME scholarships go to students of color and 40% to women," Murphy adds. "ASME empowers the next generation of engineers and believes diversity drives innovation, and as an organization committed to a culture of belonging and inclusion, we support that.” 

ASME Foundation scholarships address the college funding gap for the most deserving students in the U.S. and abroad. In the U.S., among engineers with college degrees, fewer than 15% are women and less than 14% are individuals from minority groups long underrepresented in the profession. ASME awards are made to high-achieving student members of the Society who are enrolled in two-year, four-year and graduate degree programs. For the 2021-2022 academic year, more than 150 ASME Foundation, Auxiliary, and Divisional scholarships were awarded to 113 students, totaling more than $500,000—ASME’s largest-ever cohort of scholarship recipients and highest-ever aggregate funding amount.

"Ansys' continued support of ASME scholarships and other philanthropic initiatives reflects our shared commitment to increasing access to STEM careers, especially among those who are underrepresented in the engineering community," says Kathleen Lobb, executive director of the ASME Foundation and managing director, ASME Philanthropy. 

Scholarship applications are due Feb. 17 for undergraduate college students, March 3 for graduate students and March 15, 2022, for high school seniors. ASME student members can click here for more information on the scholarship application process.
