Siemens' Simcenter portfolio of engineering software is deep, scalable and integrated. Family members include familiar design-engineer-friendly yet industrial-strength tools like FEMAP, NX NASTRAN, STAR-CCM+ and soon Simcenter Webapp Server. The latter is a web-based application that can help you make Simcenter Amesim system simulations available to more engineers throughout your company. Dropping its name also segues nicely to today's Check it Out subject, Simcenter Amesim 17.

With the Simcenter Amesim (née LMS Imagine.Lab Amesim) platform, design engineers can simulate, assess and optimize mechatronic systems. Platform here means it comes with a suite of modeling and analysis tools in tailored solutions for you do-bees in areas like aerospace, automotive, energy, industrial machinery and heavy equipment. It provides multiphysics libraries with thousands of validated components to help your workflow move along briskly, and it plays well with CAD, CAE and enterprise solutions. There's also a cloud-based version of Simcenter Amesim.

There are a ton of goodies rolling out in Version 17. For now the brief is that its big new features and enhancements focus on five broad areas of operation, such as electrification tasks dealing with hybrid and electric vehicle motors, aircraft systems performance, vehicle systems and components as well as controls engineering. Interoperability plays an important role across many of these areas, as version 17 sees tighter integration with the Simcenter application portfolio and with the Teamcenter product lifecycle management suite.

It's a multimedia presentation offering you easy-to-digest chunks of data in concise but detailed accounts covering those five areas of change. The formula is a bulleted list of notable features, a quick discussion, a video and, often, a still picture.

Start with the first video. It provides the overview of the new capabilities in Simcenter Amesim 17. From there, scroll down and pick your bailiwick. The videos range from 3:30 minutes to 4:30 minutes. Particularly fascinating are the videos on importing motor characteristics with the Simcenter SPEED electric motor design tool and on building a real-time compatible model of an auto cooling system.
