NASA Expands Use of Exa Corporation's PowerFLOW Software

NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project has expanded its use of Exa Corporation's PowerFLOW simulation software. Exa is a provider of fluid simulation solutions for product engineering. The government agency is using the software for full-scale aircraft simulations as well as noise reduction.

The project's goal is to reduce noise generated by landing gears and high-lift wings using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software. NASA is running the PowerFLOW software on more than 10,000 cores.

"We are raising the bar with full-scale simulations," said Mehdi Khorrami, senior research engineer at NASA Langley Research Center. "This is challenging stuff, at the frontiers of computational fluid dynamics. The simulations of the full-scale aircraft with noise reduction concepts will help recover a significant part of the loss of the flight test. In addition, the simulations provide valuable insight into the sources of airframe noise."
